Julian Alvarez is made for Arsenal and a huge summer transfer is tempting for both
Arsenal will get a close-quarters sighting of Julian Alvarez on Wednesday night, the Atletico Madrid striker is a player that they and Europe's big hitters much admire
View 2 ImagesAtletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone effectively told the world that the biggest clubs all want Alvarez, with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in the hunt this summer.
Arsenal will get their own glimpse at close quarters of the Argentina World Cup striker as they face Atletico in the two-legged Champions League semi-final. Barcelona have been the team who have been most heavily linked with the former Manchester City striker. But Paris Saint Germain are clearly in the hunt as well for a player who is valued at £120m-plus by Atletico. And that is just the more conservative estimate.
Surely that sort of price is beyond Barcelona but the Spanish giants somehow manage to do their sums to get big deals done. However, Atletico are not keen to sell and they may have something to say about the whole transfer saga as they are keen to tie him down to a new deal.

The issue here for Arsenal is about finding the money as well but also proving they are big enough and successful enough to lure Alvarez back to English football and the Premier League.
Alvarez is still only 26 but had two years at Manchester City when he scored 36 goals in 103 total games but found himself largely playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland. Atletico then signed him for just over £80m in 2024 and the former River Plate striker has gone from strength to strength in La Liga.
This is a player who can operate as a No.9, was largely a support striker at City and can play behind as a No.10 if required. The difference now is that he has matured, become a better player with his movement and finishing while his pace has become more noticeable.
He is a clever player with game intelligence who links the play well and brings other players into the game.
That is made for Arsenal.
View 2 ImagesThere were some links to Arsenal last summer before they went for Viktor Gyokeres and clearly sporting director Andrea Berta knows him from their time at Atletico.
If anyone should be able to get a deal done then it should be Berta. But Arsenal already have three strikers in Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and also Gabriel Jesus who has a year left on his contract.
Arsenal would probably have to offload two of those players to make a push for Alvarez and if there was a suggestion that Gyokeres was signed as a back-up striker to Havertz – albeit for £64m – this guy would come in as first choice.
So, would he come back to English football? The suggestion is he might be tempted. But to do that Arsenal would have to put themselves on the top stage of European football.
They are chasing the Premier League title and also the Champions League. They probably need the cash rewards from winning both, too.
But this is a special player and it is no wonder that Alvarez will be seen as the main threat and main man standing in Arsenal’s way of reaching the Champions League final.
